So I decided to start a blog because of the overwhelming amount of questions I get about being gluten free, mostly about where I eat. I'm not 100% sure the direction I will take my writing in, but for now I have compiled a list of my favorite restaurants that I dine at regularly. For those of you who don't know, I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease at age 18. I will do a separate post in regard to that journey, but wanted to get this info available to all of my clients who have been asking!
Aroha New Zealand Cuisine and Bar 30990 Russell Ranch Road., Unit C Westlake Village, CA 91362 - (805) 405-5054
100% GF Optional Menu, including the best brunch ever! I make 2 desserts on the menu. A chocolate peanut butter implosion, and a white chocolate raspberry plate of heaven. Aroha is a seafood and meat lovers dream, and everything is is flown in fresh daily. They even have gluten free bread available when you sit down! A real treat to gluten free diners, and traditional diners as well!
Hugos - 5046 Cornell Rd Agoura Hills, CA 91301 - (818) 707-0300
I eat everything here. I’ve literally had almost everything on the menu from fried pickles to pancakes, burgers, eggs benedict, and sticky buns for dessert. The make amazing gluten free flatbread in house and almost everything on the menu can be prepared gluten free. The staff is extremely friendly and above that, very knowledge about dietary restrictions. Breakfast is available daily til 4pm, 7 days a week! They also have a location in Studio City and West Hollywood
14 Cannons Brewery - 31125 Via Colinas #907, Westlake Village, CA 91362 - (818) 699-6165
Their amazing Bestlake Blonde has been crafted gluten free, and it is amazing! You can find me here once a month pairing cupcakes and donuts to all of their fabulous beer. They also have food trucks throughout the month, and many have gluten free options! You can also bring in your own food so grab your friends and go check out the best brewery in town!
Five07 Coffee Bar and Eatery - 2036 E Avenida De Los Arboles, Thousand Oaks, CA 91360 - (805) 492-0507
GLUTEN. FREE. CREPES. And a bunch of other delicious stuff too, with a great staff and a cozy environment. Avocado toast? Done. Muffins? Done. They get fresh baked goods locally and have a lot of vegan options as well!
Streets By Bistro Orient - 74 N Skyline Dr, Thousand Oaks, CA 91362 - (805) 496-0800
A ton of gluten free options. My favorite is the beef pho, which is a naturally gluten free soup (some places add crispy onions so always ask!) but it’s made with rice noodles and beef broth. I get it with either the rare steak or chicken. I love their pad thai, and garlic green beans with steak. They have gluten free soy sauce available and everything I’ve heard about their sushi is good too!
California Pizza Kitchen - multiple locations
My favorite pizza! They have a certified Gluten Free prep space for pizza, and it is beyond delicious. My favorite is the pepperoni with truffle oil. People regularly tell me they prefer the gluten free crust over the original, which always brings me a little sense of joy, since I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease years ago when gluten free food tasted like cardboard.
Bj’s Brewhouse - multiple locations
Gluten Free Pizookie. Does anything else actually matter? No, but if you insist on eating real food as well as dessert, my go to is their pizza and their soup. They have a great mozzarella salad on their small plates menu that is the perfect appetizer as well. BJ’s offers a berry cider made in house that is so crisp and refreshing, I’ve actually forgotten it contains alcohol. Their in house root beer and cream soda is delicious too.
Pf Changs - multiple locations
A full gluten free menu, and it’s served on a distinct plate so there is never any confusion on whether its safe to eat! Chang’s Spicy Chicken with fried rice in my favorite. They have gluten free soy sauce thats served in a red container instead of black or individual packets.
Stacked - multiple locations
Everything on their iPad lists which ingredients are gluten free. I always let the server know just incase there is a miscommunication on the iPad, and I've had nothing but positive experiences here!
Jersey Mike's - multiple locations
If someone told me I could eventually eat an actual sub sandwich somewhere that wasn't wrapped in lettuce, I would have never believed you. The day I saw that Jersey Mike's used Udi's rolls, and prepared everything separate, I honestly didn't believe it. My favorite is the #7, Mike's way with pickles and yellow mustard.
In n Out - multiple locations
Everything on their menu is gluten free, except the bun. I get a protein style double-double, with fries and a shake! Let them know its for an allergy. (Even though technically Celiac isn't an allergy, but people are familiar with the importance of keeping it separate when you say that)
Outback Steakhouse - multiple locations
A huge gluten free menu. Their garlic mashed potatoes are one of my favorite things ever.
Red Robin - multiple locations
I was hesitant at first that a family, fast-ish food restaurant would be so great with dietary restrictions. When they got their gluten free buns, I had to try. Not only are they delicious, but they have great specials! You can go directly on their website and list your allergies and it tells you how to modify each item. I love that their fries are cooked separately too!
Leave a note in the comments about what else you'd like to know about! Snacks, traveling with dietary restrictions, etc.
